Germany: White House conversation record (1933-1947Z) (Bush call to MT) [his meeting with Kohl - monitoring record only] [declassified Aug 2009]

Document type: Declassified documents
Source: Bush Library: CTF01729
Editorial comments:

There does not appear to be a British record of the call or a US one, beyond a White House note of the timing and monitoring. MT was called out of a reception at No.10 to receive the call, so the timing may have been unexpected to the British side.

It is likely that the topic was the President's weekend meeting with Kohl. Charles Powell minuted MT on 26 Feb 1990 suggesting she raise with President Bush the date and place of their next meeting "when he telephones you back about Chancellor Kohl's visit this weekend" (PREM19/3207 f109).

Importance ranking: Major
Word count: 2pp
Themes: MT's meetings as PM, MT contacts with George Bush Sr, British relations with the US, British relations with the Soviet Union, British relations with France, British relations with the Federal Republic of Germany, German unification, 1989-90, Foreign policy (USA), Foreign policy (USSR & successor states), Foreign policy (Western Europe - non-EU), Foreign policy (Central & Eastern Europe), Defence (general)
