Friday 10th December

Teeth OK!

DOT [Department of Trade] - Michael Beesley on Deregulation - NBC man back to Salter 1932 etc. Beesley said officials were favourable to deregulation.

IEA with PM, RH [Lord Ralph Harris], JW [John Wood], Rose [Harold Rose], Minford. PM in good form - wanted to see some growth. Patrick [Patrick Minford] said important to lift thresholds.

AG [Alfred Goldstein] - should he sign main report with reservations? DH [David Howell] was very keen on this but I suspect a Serpell trap.

Mkts OK gilts firmed & and shares up

by [sic: but probably meant] 7 day is still 1015/16 - too high for comfort

Talked to MS [Michael Scholar] about a successor - he said I am “not a prima donna”

IG [Indexed Gilts] £250m ’88 2% to supply the Post Office people
