Friday 8th October 1982

Interest rates kept falling creating more expectations - FT went momentarily through 600 barrier for first time in History

Saw Kenneth Baker at Conference - he said DI [Department of Industry] had taken my criticism of BT to heart and were suggesting an alternative that “would be acceptable to me” - we’ll see

Lunch at Healthfood Restaurant - met (Peter?) Townsend MP - one of Ian Gow’s boys [John Townsend]

Speech - great success - used most of my economics and jokes - but I thought a mistake to include detail on wage costs/unit of output - opening on Falklands and final peroration on no change

- steadfast etc. excellent

Keith [Keith Joseph] asked me to comment on Enoch’s Paper

Returned to London - curry and early to bed!
