Fuss about Leon Brittan’s speech on how do you finance welfare state - Guardian “threat” etc.

Private Secretaries - little or no news from Peking or yet Hongkong - PM to see Mrs Ghadi [sic Mrs Indira Gandhi] for breakfast on they way back

Peter M [Peter Middleton] - I agree that we should put pressure on Eddie [Eddie George] to get interest rates down again

- everything propitious - inflation at 6½ by end/yr. Stg at 91.7, etc. - we need it before the conference
