Thursday 15th July 1982
Cabinet on Public Exp. - Willie [William Whitelaw] needed friends so he waited till end and then pro Chancellor Speech [probably a reference to Michael Fagan breaking in to The Queen’s bedroom at Buckingham Palace on 9 July 1982]
Hailsham also said that in the last 18 months he thought our policy was succeeding.
(- see separate notes on meeting)
- good meeting, much better than last year when Chancellor was savaged by Nott
PS [Private Secretary] Lunch - Clive [Clive Whitmore] announced he was leaving for Defence - all genuinely sad
Question Time entirely on ASLEF
PM very worried about unemployment
- seasonally adjusted figures of < + 13,000
- but crude about 3,130,000
- censure debate within a week or two?
Richard Haas - just visiting
