PM spent long time getting back from Heathrow - Tube strike

Note to PM on Public Exp and Defence

- need for new methods, and should not enter any more open ended commitments

Cabinet - WW [William Whitelaw] gave account of Operation Puffer for dealing with rail strike

Saw Sparrow waiting for E - he wanted to know about Gas Gath [Gathering] Pipeline - thought it had been rejected

Norry Adelman - Britain join OPEC and reduce output? - Never

Frank Hahn - “Inflation does not matter”

- but agreed that variation mattered and that variance was positively correlated with rate of inflation

- Unemployment “caused by Thatcher”

- I argued that not true Ireland, France, Germany
