Att Gen [Sir Michael Havers] said if PM fell under a bus Carrington would make an excellent PM.

Lunch with PM - Algerian PM phoned to say Mark [Mark Thatcher] was in good health. DT [Denis Thatcher] also phoned.

She asked what happened to interest rates = 0.

The £ has been sinking today as gold ↓ $ ↑

Visit from leak investigator (Air Vice Marshall Locke) about leak to Guardian 8th Jan of Baroness Young’s memo to Cabinet on indexed pensions. I never received it.

PM received flowers from No.10 staff and was very touched and moved - very complimentary about staff - she later sent around a very kind note to all at No 10.
