Not a very productive day, much of it spent talking to Norman [Strauss], David [Wolfson] about our role and purpose. Clive W [Whitmore] came in v. nervously in the morning to say that MT said she did not want David or me at the miners’ strike meeting [of ministers] or the MLR talk this afternoon. She apparently felt there were too many No 10 people at yesterday’s coal strike meeting. Poor Clive was quite nervous. We all roared with laughter and warned him we might sulk and slam a few doors. I am now virtually certain I’ll be gone in months or even weeks. ...
