Editorial comments: A further memo follows the first. George Newall was MT’s principal driver in her first years at No.10. Colin Peterson was in charge of Ecclesiastical Appointments, so selection of cars for Prime Ministerial use was something of a stretch perhaps. This note quietly suppresses the crucial fact that the new Rover 3.5 had been ordered as a replacement Prime Ministerial car by MT’s predecessor and found utterly wanting, Callaghan finally refusing to use the cars altogether when a window fell into his lap one day. See Bernard Donoughue&rsquo's excellent Downing Street Diary: Volume 2 , pp353-54, entry for 1 Spt 1978.
