MT meeting President Carter at the White House (Oval Office)

Around 1030. Shadow Foreign Secretary John Davies was also present. In early discussions of meeting arrangements the White House had wanted to avoid a photo opportunity altogether, a crushing condition which MT’s office strenuously resisted on her behalf. A compromise was reached allowing photographs on her arrival and departure from the building. Somewhere along the way this was upgraded to a shot with the President standing by the Oval Office fireplace. See British National Archives, FCO 82/774.
