Editorial comments: 1005 and 2200. MT spoke to the group of 38 Tories first elected in 1970. The dinner was a private one, but several MPs reported a passage in the speech along the lines: "I think you can assume this parliament is likely to be rather longer than the previous ones". According to The Times: "They [the MPs present] took it as a deliberate attempt to dampen speculation of an election in June".
