Prime Minister

We welcome Dan QuayleVice-President and Mrs. Quayle.

We have just had a ceremony to honour General Eisenhower on the centennial of his birth. This country owes so much to him, not only in his tremendous capacity as a brilliant general who guided us to victory, but also in the tremendous vision which he showed when he was President and we have just been remarking on some of his speeches even in those early days when he foresaw the unification of Germany and foresaw that we should come to a stage when a divided Europe would be a thing of the past. That is what we are working for now, but can I pass you over now to Vice-President Quayle whom we warmly welcome on this occasion.

Vice-President Quayle

Thank you very much, Prime Minister Thatcher.

We are on a three-country swing to commemorate the centennial of the birth of Dwight David Eisenhower.

We reflected on the accomplishments and the goals of Dwight Eisenhower and had good discussions about the future and the future is going to be one that presents many challenges. [end p1]

There is no substitute for NATO; there is no substitute for peace and freedom. Obviously, NATO will in fact accommodate itself to the changes that we find—NATO working with the CSCE, the EC, other institutions to provide for European security and also to look to trade opportunities and to global responsibilities.

It is always a pleasure to be with the Prime Minister. She continues to have a very important and special relationship with our President. Your country and our country continue to have that special relationship that has worked for peace and freedom for a number of years. We are always very respectful and solicit her ideas on where we should be going together in this world to make sure that we do have the peace and freedom that is so dear to us.
