She was photographed in The Times (8 February 1990) hugging a little girl whose eyes had been removed to combat a rare form of cancer. She described the children as "VEPS - very exceptional people". Other cuttings in the file (THCR 6/2/2/237 f118) record her saying of the winners: "Each of you has lit a lamp, each one of you, and these lamps stretch out along the way to the future, their light on it making it a way of hope". |
