Prime Minister

Thank you, Mr. Mayor, you are very kind!

After a lovely welcome from the people of this town, you have now given us a lovely ceremony here. This town hall is beautiful and the town, too, is one of great history and we saw the beauty of the area as we came from Mannheim.

Chancellor Kohl has always told me of the lovely wine which is grown in this area and sometimes has given me some of it to sample and I agree with him, it is a lovely wine and it is very suitable for me because it is a lovely dry wine with just a touch of sweetness! (laughter) and now you honour me by giving me the leaf of a vine, so we shall have reason to remember this visit every year and to thank you for your very kind hospitality as a signal of the friendship between both our countries and the Agreement which I think also is 40 years old and which was first celebrated at Konigswinter.

Thank you very much for your gift for my tenth anniversary, which I will share with my Cabinet when we have a dinner next Thursday to celebrate. Thank you very much!
