Dear George BushGeorge,

I send you my warmest congratulations on your inauguration as President of the United States. You bring to the Presidency enormous experience in Government which will be of immense value not only to the United States but to the whole free world as well.

America under your leadership will continue to enjoy Britain's firm friendship and support in our great common cause of peace with freedom and justice. I shall do all which lies in my power to ensure that the special relationship which has served both our countries so well continues in the future.

The responsibilities which you are assuming are awesome. But you will be sustained in them by the admiration and good will of many millions of people around the world. I add to that my own warm good wishes to you and to Barbara BushBarbara.

Denis joins me in sending our warm period regards to you both. Yours sincerely Margaret Thatcher
