The Prime Minister would hardly describe the Conservative showing as a major defeat - which it was. But, “disappointing” - the word she uses in her letter to the Party Chairman - says a great deal to those involved in a campaign that failed to overcome Labour's challenge.
In the event, Labour were this morning enjoying their moment of victory - having suffered so many defeats in the past. The Tory campaign had been characterised by disputes within the ranks and by what Mr. Kinnock described as the Thatcher factor.
