MT was asked whether the attack would mean extra protection for civil servants. She replied: "This is a new factor that we obviously had to take into account. This is the first time we have had a direct bomb attack on civil servants working in the Northern Ireland Office and it is just a matter of great concern to us. It just shows that the IRA are now after civilians. They have no sort of sympathy with any human feelings at all" (13 September 1988).
