Commentary

In fact she slept, but only for a few hours before descending No.10's famous staircase, its walls lined with the photographs of past Prime Ministers. And then they emerged into the Downing Street sunshine to be greeted by the roars of the crowd in the street and the applause of staff and well-wishers above. Many had waited since dawn. Mrs Thatcher rewarded as many as she could with a handshake or a thank you and for those she couldn't reach she climbed up on the side of her car. This was after all an historic moment in political history, a moment she was determined to savour to the full. …
