Jaguar story a model for industry—PM

The Prime Minister held up the success of privatised Jaguar as an example to British industry when she flew into the West Midlands today.

Mrs Thatcher arrived by helicopter at Birmingham International Airport at lunchtime, and was later travelling to Coventry to meet Jaguar chairman Sir John Egan.

At the airport she said: “Privatising Jaguar has been a great success. We shall be holding it up to voters as the way forward in the future.”

And she said that the new management regime at Rover Cars was starting to pay dividends. She could see that company too being privatised in the future.

Mrs Thatcher, who was visiting Birmingham before coming to Coventry, said the issues she would be emphasing during her visit to the area were “economic strength” and defence. She renewed her attack on Labour leader Neil Kinnock 's non-nuclear policy.

Asked about hard left Labour candidates such as Coventry South East's Militant Dave Nellist, she said: “I think it is part of our job to show the voters the true nature of the Labour Party.”
