The fire took place the previous evening; some kind of briefing or statement was given out late on 18 November 1987 stating that MT was "absolutely horrified". The Times, 20 November 1987 has further material. Visiting University College Hospital MT commented: "I am horrified like everyone else. It is one of the worst disasters we have had for some time." She praised the courage of firemen. "It was acutely distressing to hear the many number of deaths". She had tried to imagine how the victims had felt as the fire suddenly "got violently worse". According to the Daily Express (20 Nov 1987) she was close to tears when she visited the wounded at University College Hospital.
