Dear Peter,
I hasten to say that I am not intending to write to you the normal letter for Ministers leaving the Government! Indeed, I hope that there will be an opportunity in future years for you to increase your contribution to public life as one of Her Majesty's Ministers. But I do want to say how very grateful I am for your generosity in agreeing to leave the Department of Trade and Industry for the task in Central Office. As I told you this afternoon, that task is an absolutely key one if our Party and the policies which we stand for are to win through.
Yours ever
Margaret
