| Editorial comments: | 1525-1640. MT was to due speak informally, without taking questions. The Middlesbrough Evening Gazette (9 September 1986) has a brief account of the speech. There was a "strong tip that she’d be back on the hustings within 18 and 20 months and she’s already started the next election fight". After the speech she did take questions; indeed the paper reported "tough questions" on unemployment and the closure of Smith’s Dock in Langbaurgh. |
