1. Question

In what way, if any, have current Anglo/Portuguese relations been shaped by the alliance?

Answer

The alliance has provided stability in our relations over 600 years and a tradition of friendship. It has therefore been a fine foundation on which we can work together—as we do exceptionally well.

2. Question

Apart from the language, could this relationship be termed as special as compared to the “special relationship” with the United States?

Answer

Undoubtedly a treaty relationship which has endured for 600 years is special, not to say unique. The fact that Portugal is the oldest friend and ally of this country is a matter of pride.

3. Question

With Portugal and Britain now in the EEC is the alliance obsolete?

Answer

No, certainly not. The alliance helps our two countries to work together the more effectively in the Community, even though our interests on some issues diverge. I have been very impressed by the ease with which, as Prime Minister, I have been able to work with successive Portuguese leaders both inside and outside the Community.

4. Question

What is the future of it? Another 600 years?

Answer

Another 600 years would be very welcome. We have a saying in English “you can't change the habits of a lifetime” . Well there is no reason to change the habit of friendship and harmony stretching back over 600 years.
