| Editorial comments: | 1500-1630 MT opened a special unit for the disabled at The Firs, 94/96 Stoneyfields Lane, Finchley (a John Groom’s project). The Finchley Times, 23 February 1984, has a brief account. She spoke of her recent visit to the Soviet Union, mentioning that she had went to a reception in St George’s Hall. "Everybody lays claim to him. He was such a good man. But he is ours". 1645-1730 she visited a private hospital in Oakleigh Park before attending an NSPCC function at a private address (2000-2130) where she accepted a 45,000 pound cheque and told the story of how a previous cheque from the North West London NSPCC travelled to New Delhi in her handbag: "it was well-known at Downing Street that the safest place for anything was her handbag" (Finchley Times, 23 February 1984). |
