Viscount Macmillan the Conservative MP for South-West Surrey and son of the former Prime Minister has died after an operation. He was 63. Maurice Macmillan, who acquired the title of Viscount Macmillan of Ovenden when his father was created Earl of Stockton last month, went into politics after distinguished war service in army intelligence. He served almost continuously as an MP from 1955, holding a number of government posts in Conservative administrations. At various times, he was Employment Secretary, Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Economic Secretary and Paymaster General. In the 1983 election, he had a majority of more than fourteen-thousand.

Today Mrs Thatcher described him as a distinguished son of a distinguished father, who'd brought a lifetime of service, an original mind and a great devotion to politics. Mr. Edward Heath, in whose Cabinet he served in 1970, said his death was a great personal loss.
