MT

I have made it perfectly clear that we have not asked for the Stuttgart Summit to be put off. Any initiative in that has come from Chancellor Kohl who is consulting his colleagues. We did not ask for Stuttgart to be put off in any way.

Questioner

Can I tempt you Prime Minister …

MT

I must say it would have been extremely difficult, would be extremely difficult for me to attend it, I mean to leave this country in the last week of an election campaign I just don't think I could have done. A general doesn't leave a field of battle when it's coming up to a climax, and so I just personally myself might manage to get over there for a couple of hours but on a Monday or Tuesday of the last week, I doubt it.

Questioner

That sounds as though you're saying that you will not be going?

MT

I personally could not go that last week. It, uh, Francis Pym would go and represent me there, but I couldn't. If you're in charge of a battle when it comes to the final stages, you just can't leave the field.
