| Editorial comments: | 1410-1630. See Finchley Press, 20 July 1979. MT "moved briskly from stall to stall under the watchful eye of crowds and detectives alike", buying tea towels, a charity balloon and otherwise spending generously. The Finchley Times, 19 July 1979, also has an account of the Carnival. MT paid for a ticket in a charity raffle but refused to take the ticket. Told "You never know your luck", she replied "I had my luck in May". She committed a breach of etiquette by starting to leave the official platform before the Lady Mayor of Finchley and realising her mistake called back to the Mayor to leave first: "No, my dear, you are the first lady of the Borough". |
