Due to the lengthy Christmas Recess, Members of Parliament are unable to discuss the increasingly grave industrial situation.

In view of the seriousness of the position, I am writing to ask that as a matter of urgent priority on your return you should review next week's Parliamentary timetable and make time for proper consideration and debate.

Damage to the economy and disruption of daily life have already occurred as a result of the action of the lorry and tanker drivers, with their supporting pickets.

In addition, there is the threat of further disputes, for example on the railways and in the public services.

I regard it as essential, therefore, that a major Statement is made to the House on the first day it reassembles, Monday 15th January, and that this is followed on Tuesday or Wednesday at the latest by a full day's debate.

Because of the hardship and suffering which has already been experienced, and the deep concern about the future, I believe that this is the least the country expects of Parliament.

I have to speak at a luncheon today, arranged by the Association of British Chambers of Commerce, and shall refer to the fact that I have sent this letter, but I shall not release it until after my speech. I understand you will have returned by lunch-time and therefore will have had an opportunity to see it.
