Mrs T. Opens fair

Opposition Leader Margaret Thatcher is concerned about the decline of Britain in the European stakes.

She said it was terrible that Britain rescued half of Europe—and was now ranked seventh in the economic and industrial league.

But the Finchley and Friern Barnet MP was convinced that Britain still had to play a leading role in the Common Market.

Work

Her words came during the opening of the Finchley and Friern Barnet Tories' autumn fair in St. Mary's Hall, Church End Finchley.

The audience were also told that she believed people “want to do a fair day's work for a fair day's pay.”

The Tories, said Mrs Thatcher, had been responsible for recent tax cuts after some strongly worded debates with the Government.

Mrs Thatcher said she was worried about defence cuts which had run down our defences to a low level.

She added that law and order has to be restored so that people will be able to live in safety.

After her speech she received a bouquet of pink cyclamen from nine-year-old Nicola Thurlow—daughter of the constituency entertainment's committee chairman Ron Thurlow.

The fair raised £1,300 towards party funds.
