Editorial comments: | MT arrived from Beijing at 1045 local time. She spent the day in Soochow visiting a farm commune, workshops, and a school. The Glasgow Herald, 11 April 1977, has an account: "She listened attentively as officials reeled off figures, talking of production brigades and barefoot doctors. "What sort of doctor?" interjected Mrs Thatcher. Guides explained a barefoot doctor was a medical attendant who provided treatment for minor ailments at work sites". MT strolled in "The Gardens of the Futility of Politics" in the afternoon and left for Hangchow the following morning at 1000. |
