We want a bit more of the carrot in this country and a bit less of the stick. I think there are two things that Conservative Governments have always done: they've kept taxation lower than Socialist Governments and they've created more jobs. We need both those things now—lower taxes and more jobs.

People will work if they're paid to work, if the tax system encourages them to work. If it doesn't, then they won't work as hard. So, the answer is simple: encourage them to work harder and they will. Encourage them to produce the right sort of goods and they will, and then we, too, will be able once again to join the first division of nations.
