Editorial comments: | Available on CD-ROM only. The press release (273/77) was embargoed until 1200. This speech poses a number of problems. The speaking text includes an introductory section omitted from the press release (see editorial notes in text). BBC Radio News Report 1300 5 March 1977 broadcast what may well have been the peroration - seemingly omitted from both the speaking text and the press release. A question and answer session followed the speech, reported by the Guardian and Daily Telegraph. Extracts from the speech can also be found in BBC1 Tonight 8 March 1977, against which the text has been checked (see editorial notes in text, references to "BBC recording of speech"). Transcript of an article by Keith Harper published in The Guardian on 7 March 1977 and reproduced with the permission of Guardian and Observer News Services. |
