MT spoke extempore for the first twenty minutes or so, referring to the previous day’s defeat of the Dock Work Regulation Bill and the Conservative by-election victories of the previous week. As a result the speech itself had to be shortened. She told the audience to take the press release as read: "So long as you get the message that we’re on our way, that’s all right by me" (The Times Diary, 12 November 1976). She spoke after Paul Johnson, who attacked the closed shop to which she responded by saying that any person excluded from a union should have the right to take his case to the courts.
