Margaret Thatcher

Radio Interview for BBC Radio 4 Today (by-election victories)

Document type: Speeches, interviews, etc.
Venue: 19 Flood Street, Chelsea
Source: BBC Radio News Report 0700 5 November 1976
Editorial comments: Available on CD-ROM only. MT was speaking shortly after the declarations. She said almost the same thing, word for word, to the Evening Standard (5 November 1976). The Guardian (5 November 1976) reported remarks in the early hours: "I am thrilled with the triumphant Conservative gains at Workington and Walsall North. There is no substitute for victory. The results have shown that we Conservatives are in touch with and in tune with the hearts of the people. The people’s rejection of the Government has been overwhelming". See also Daily Express (similar sentiments) and Evening News (photographed giving V sign, remarking "I’m never sure which way round to do it. I’m told that if you do it the wrong way round it means something awful") - both 5 November 1976.
