Shadow job refused by Du Cann

In a statement last night, Mrs Thatcher summed up her reflections on the Shadow Cabinet-making exercise. It read:

I would like to thank most warmly those of my colleagues who have served in Government and in the Shadow Cabinet but who have relinquished their posts.

They have contributed a great deal to the country and our party and I know that they will continue to give generously of their experience from the back benches.

Wide experience

I am delighted to welcome back into the Shadow Cabinet Mr Reginald Maudling. His wide experience will be of great value to us all.

I had hoped that Mr Edward du Cann would join the Shadow Cabinet and I invited him to do so. He feels, however, that, for the time being, he can be of more assistance by remaining as chairman of the 1922 Committee and chairman of the Select Committee on Public Accounts.
