| Editorial comments: | Time unclear. MT attended speech day at Britain’s only Jewish public school. The event was overshadowed by a dispute over the choice of headmaster. The Sunday Times, 20 June 1971, reported: "Mrs Thatcher didn’t rise to the bait. She’d come to praise independent schools, she praised independent schools, and she made an excuse and left. (A valid excuse; to speak in the House.)" The Jewish Chronicle, 25 June 1971, adds, "She described the school as the most beautiful she had ever seen". |
