Editorial comments: 1600. The Finchley Times, 26 February 1970, reports: "At an informal gathering on the building site, Mrs Thatcher put wet concrete under the foundation stone with a trowel and said, "It’s just like putting icing on a cake". She said that when she announced her department’s policy to concentrate on replacing outdated primary schools, she had in mind one or two schools in her own constituency. She knew St John’s had been hoping for a new school since she first represented Finchley in Parliament more than 10 years ago".
