Ladbrokes gave odds against the candidates occupying the post in twenty five years: MT shared the longest odds with Norman St John Stevas and Jeremy Thorpe at 1000:1. Shirley Williams was quoted at 500:1, with Peter Walker, Peter Shore, Dick Taverne and William Rodgers all at 10:1 and Richard Marsh favourite at 5:1.
