Editorial comments: | 1430. The interview was little more than chat at a photo session from which trivial remarks were extracted to form captions: see Life magazine, October 1989 (12/2), pp27-31. (On the study at No.10) "It took me years to make this room pretty". "I started scraping the old green damask off the walls myself." "I think a friendly and welcoming feel is more important than a formal one". "I like rugs in a room, but not so many they look like postage stamps which have been scattered around". She complained of a Japanese platter ornamented with her own face: "It makes my face look fat,". On lightening the walls of the study and the state rooms: "I just take everything back to the walls, make them oatmeal to lighten things up and get all my color from the upholstery and drapes."
