Editorial comments: The crowds were so great that MT was driven to the polling station, although her home in Flood Street was only 150 yards away. "Don’t jostle. Don’t jostle" she said (Evening Standard, 3 May 1979). Meeting the press as she came out she refused to be drawn on any subject but the weather ("lovely day"). ITN extracted a further remark: she admitted to being "cautiously optimistic" (ITN indexes). (Nicholas Scott, the Tory candidate, informed the press that she had told him she was confident.) Denis Thatcher accompanied his wife but voted in Kent.
