Editorial comments: MT’s visited a number of sites on Merseyside, on the broad theme of urban regeneration. The Liverpool Daily Post, 28 July 1990, has the fullest coverage. First stop was the SERC laboratory at Daresbury (1030-1130): "I am delighted to have been able to see some of the most up-to-date research in Britain, if not the world". She unveiled a plaque marking the beginning on office development on the land beside the Anglican Cathedral (1155-1350), speaking of the "great inheritance" left by the Victorian City fathers. "They were vital and enterprising people and they would have hated dereliction as we do, they would have hated waste as we do. It is bold to build something new on a fresh site. It requires even more courage and faith to replace decay with the noble structure of the future". The development represented "a new rebirth of the spirit of the city".
