Dear Prime Minister

I have now had the priviledge of serving in your three successive administrations continuously since 1979 and I have been honoured and delighted to do so. During that time I have been lucky enough to be given some most interesting and absorbing posts, to the envy I daresay of more worthy recipients. I am most grateful to you.

But I believe the time has now come for me to make way for some of the excellent people already on the Government front bench in the Lords and others no doubt waiting for their chance to catch your eye. Accordingly, I should be grateful if you would allow me to leave the Government at a moment convenient to yourself. Perhaps you will, in due course, let me know when that might be.

I wish to place on record my deep appreciation of all your personal kindness and encouragement, and assure you of my total support and loyalty in the future.

Your ever

Lord TrefgarneDavidDear

Thank you for your letter of 30 June in which you confirmed the indication you gave some months ago that you would wish to leave the Government at a convenient moment.

I am very sorry to see you go but fully understand your reasons. You have served in the Government for a decade in several Departments and, as is often required in the Lords, have acted as spokesman for the Government on a wide range of subjects. This you have always done staunchly and with characteristic vigour. May I thank you warmly for all that you have done.

I am grateful to you for your expression of loyalty and support. I send you and Rosalie my best wishes in whatever interests you now pursue.

Warm good wishes

Your sincerely

Margaret
