The fifteen eleven year-olds decided to request a meeting with the Tory leader to help them out on a school project on central government, though they were more than a bit surprised when she actually agreed. The group enjoyed an hour at No.10, half of the time spent chatting with the Prime Minister.

Girl

Why was No.10 chosen to be the residence of all the Prime Ministers?

MT

It was because George II purchased a house and, as you'll see when you go around, it's really two houses joined into one. Do you see, there's a house just through that window there? Well, that is the house that was immediately behind this. And it's joined together by that long corridor.

Girl

I haven't travelled the world, but I would like to. We know you've travelled the world. Which country do you like the most?

MT

I … there are so many that you like when you see, and they are so very, very different. If you want to go further out of Europe, as most of us do, I think you'll find India an absolutely fascinating country.

Second Girl

I asked her a question about who was her biggest political influence, and she said that one of the best Prime Ministers had been Winston Churchill and she tried to follow him.

Third Girl

I think it's fabulous and I'd really like to become Prime Minister.

Before speeding off to her next engagement, Mrs Thatcher arranged for her guests to have a guided tour of her home and she went away armed with gifts of a Welsh loving-spoon and a traditional Welsh tie for Denis.
