This Christmas brings with it the particular joy of seeing Czechoslovakia once more become a free and democratic country, especially for those of us who remember the years immediately before and after the last war.

You have won the respect and admiration of everyone and we warmly welcome Czechoslovakia and her proud capital of Prague back into the mainstream of Europe, where she rightly belongs.

We can approach the New Year with higher hopes than ever for a more peaceful and prosperous world.

So I bring you a message of deep and abiding friendship from the British people. We wish your new government success and we wish the people of Czechoslovakia a Happy Christmas and a good New Year. May 1990 bring a bright future for you all.
