Editorial comments: Between 1530 and 1730. The Surrey Mirror, 10 August 1984, has four pages of coverage, including two of photographs. There were 300 or so demonstrators on MT’s arrival, many of them members of health service unions, who chanted insults and threw eggs. But there were also cheering supporters from local constituency associations. Geoffrey Howe, Kenneth Baker and George Gardiner were present (as local MPs), and Normal Fowler, as Health Secretary. MT commented as she unveiled a plaque commemorating the visit: "As we have gone round the new hospital we have observed the excellent layout, the marvellous medical staff which you have and all the other wonderful support staff. It would be impossible not to notice the delight in the eyes and hear the praise of the patients who say that they could never have had better treatment anywhere else.
