According to the Coventry Evening Telegraph (25 February 1984) she gave a "wide ranging impromptu speech", saying that "Britain now had one of the highest growth rates and lowest inflation rates in Europe", citing the success of Jaguar Cars and the science park as evidence of a new spirit of industrial renewal. Taking questions she noted comments that more teachers were needed to reduce class sizes.
