Editorial comments: Exact time and place unknown. MT arrived in Bolton at 1530 and left immediately after her speech at 2005. The Daily Telegraph, 2 May 1979 - see Speech to Conservatives in Prestwich for full report - mentions that MT "was asked in Bolton yesterday about the latest opinion polls. She said "If they’d been very good then we’d try not to boast about them. It is very unwise to do so. If they are not so good it makes our people go out and work much harder. The only thing that matters is the one on Polling Day. As you know the polls have been all over the place. ... We really can’t have very much faith in them". A MORI poll of opinion in Bolton East - the swing constituency MT was visiting - was published just as she arrived, showing a fall in the Conservative lead from 9 to 2 per cent over the course of the campaign (Daily Mirror, 2 May 1979). A Marplan poll of the Home Counties was more comforting to MT (Guardian, 2 May 1979).
