Margaret Thatcher

Remarks visiting Hamilton (by-election)

Document type: Speeches, interviews, etc.
Venue: Hamilton, Lanarkshire
Source: Scottish TV Archive: OUP transcript
Editorial comments: MT spent the whole day in Hamilton and en route. No itinerary has been found. There is additional material in the Daily Express: "If Jim Callaghan does not hold an election in October, then I would say he was scared to hold one. If you think you are going to lose, then you delay. Mr Callaghan has delayed the election long enough". Scottish TV have rushes (on film); it is not certain whether the material transcribed here was ever broadcast. The noise of the crowd is so great that MT had difficulty making herself heard even to someone standing immediately beside her.
Importance ranking: Minor
Word count: 120
Themes: By-elections, Foreign policy (USSR & successor states), Foreign policy (Western Europe - non-EU), General Elections
Sound quality poor—crowd noises. MT signing autographs.
