Margaret Thatcher

Speech to Finchley Anglo-Asian Conservative Society

Document type: Speeches, interviews, etc.
Venue: Woodhouse School, North Finchley
Source: (1) Thatcher Archive: speaking text (2) Finchley Times, 20 July 1978 (3) Guardian, 15 July 1978
Journalist: (3) Simon Hoggart, Guardian, reporting
Editorial comments: Available on CD-ROM only. The press release (943/78) was embargoed until 2000. MT spoke for about ten minutes before launching into her prepared text. The Finchley Times reported that there was surprise and suspicion that a journalist from the Guardian was present because the speech had been released by Central Office and national journalists rarely troubled to attend the actual delivery. Two journalists - presumably local - had been specifically invited to attend. Transcript of an article by Simon Hoggart published in The Guardian on 15 July 1978 and reproduced with the permission of Guardian and Observer News Services.
