She said that people were trying to "work things up rather than calm them down". She also said that the party’s proposed register of immigrants was not discriminatory. "It was a practical matter. There was a problem of dependents in the Indian sub-continent, so that was where a register was suggested" (indirect speech). The Daily Mail, 13 April 1978: "Meeting her critics head on, she declared to stormy applause: "Whatever the differences between us, there is no difference when it comes to the battle ahead between what we believe in and socialism".
